As anyone who ever had to deal with constipation will surely confirm it, such an experience is not pleasant at all. However, no matter how badly your colon has been blocked up before, you will surely realize that this unfortunate man had it way worse than you!
Chinese abdominal surgeons have performed a highly uncommon surgical procedure in order to remove an unbelievable 30 inches of a man’s large intestines! The cause that led to this unfortunate event was a rare condition which caused this man to be severely constipated over a period of several years.
You’re probably already wondering what his large intestines look like, so here you go folks…
The 22-year-old man, whose name remains unknown, is thought to have had a rare disease called Hirschsprung’s disease (HD) ever since his birth. This condition means that the body has no nerves that control the bowel movement and help them to squeeze and relax to push feces out. The result of it would be build up of feces, leading to blockage of the intestines.
Doctors reported that the patient began to bulge at a very young age. He was taken for a treatment at the 10th People’s Hospital of Shanghai in eastern China. His stomach swelled to such a size, that he looked like he was heavily pregnant. For years, his solution was laxatives and other medications for constipation to stimulate his bowel movements. The man was in so much pain after so many years of living with his severe condition that he finally decided to look for medical help.
Test results quickly confirmed that the feces blocked in a section of this man’s colon was months or even years old. He was quickly taken into the operating room and underwent a three-hour operation to have 30 inches of his gut removed. The doctors stitched it closed at either end, to prevent his feces falling out. And after putting it on the scales, they found out it weighed a staggering weight of 13 kilograms! Dr. Lu mentions he was taken back by that size of the patient’s abdomen, nothing it “looked like to could explode at any time”. Fortunately, this case had a happy ending. According to Dr. Lu, the unfortunate patient is in a stable condition after his surgery, and should be fully recovered soon.
One in every 5,000 infants is the victim of Hirschsprung’s disease. It is typically found in babies and children and leads to severe constipation that causes a dangerous bowel infection, called enterocolitis if not treated in early stage. The signs of this disease vary depending on whether it is picked up in babies or children.
In newborn babies, symptoms include:
- inability to pass meconium (dark, tar-like feces that healthy babies pass soon after their birth) within 2 days
- a swollen abdomen
- vomiting green liquid (bile)
In infants and older children, symptoms include:
- a swollen stomach and stomach ache
- continuous constipation that does not get resolved with regular treatment
- poor feeding or gaining a lot of weight
If a kid develops enterocolitis they may also suffer from high temperature, and foul smelling or watery diarrhea.
The National Health Service recommends mothers and fathers should take their children to see their doctor if they notice any of the symptoms and are worried.
It is important for people to be familiar with this unusual and rare disease, so please share this article. Hopefully, thanks to this information there won’t be any more cases like this in the future.
