Charles Dickens once said: “We need never be ashamed of our tears.”
Were you familiar with the fact that crying is actually beneficial for you? According to Dr. William H. Frey II, PhD, a neuroscientist and tear researcher, crying is not just a human response to frustration or sorrow, but it is a healthy one. When you cry, you reduce emotional stress in a natural way. If left unchecked, stress has negative effect on your physical health, such as higher risk of cardiovascular disease and other stress-related diseases.
Studies show that 85% of women and 73% of men feel less sadness and anger after crying than they previously did. Many persons feel that crying makes them weak and unable to cope with their emotions and daily situations, when in fact crying is the exact opposite of that!
HERE ARE 5 REASONS WHY CRYING MEANS YOU ARE a MENTALLY strong person:
1. YOU Directly MEET YOUR EMOTIONS
When a person releases negative emotions that don’t serve their best interest, it means that they do not hide from their feelings. One sees them straight in the eyes and invites them in, allowing them to totally take them over. After a person feels these emotions and lets them run their course, however, you let them go and do not dwell in such emotional state for too long. Crying does not mean that a person is incapable to handle life; it simply means he has a greater ability to deal with anything that comes in his way, because he does not try to run away. One just stands strong and shows up for that moment, no matter what challenge it may bring.
If you feel the need to cry, know that your body needs to take out any surplus energy, or replenish itself after a stressful situation. And you should embrace this simple fact about your body without a feeling apologetic or ashamed about it.
2. YOU DON’T CARE WHAT OTHERS THINK ABOUT YOU
The act of crying is the ultimate display of vulnerability; it takes a lot of courage to express that side of yourself to other people, and not give a damn what they might think. People today live in a far too structured world, where they are almost discouraged from expressing their emotions because it will disturb the work routine, make them less productive, or due to some other pointless reason.
Crying means that one had went beyond such societal rules and realized that showing emotions makes them completely human. Without feeling emotions, people would simply be machines, mere robots performing their duties in an orderly, mundane, calculated manner. However, the human ability to cry means people are much more than machines, and people have realized this. Crying clearly shows that you have freed yourself from the prison of other people’s opinions, and have risen above the boundaries of social norms. You are aware that crying is a major part of living as a balanced, and emotionally healthy person.
3. YOU KNOW THAT CRYING HELPS YOU RELEASE SUpPresSed emotions
Repressing the human emotions can only lead to large blowouts in the end, where a person releases everything they have felt for months all in one moment. Usually, this either results with an emotional breakdown, or a large fight with someone else since you had to take out all the frustration on somebody. Neither of these outcomes is ideal, and can lead to major emotional damage in the long run. Crying on a regular basis helps a person to maintain control of their nervous system, and also takes out any stagnant emotions that do not belong to their emotional body anymore.
4. YOU KNOW THAT CRYING improves your overall health
Crying has many benefits besides the emotional ones; it actually releases hormones that make you feel good by lowering the levels of manganese, which can lead to extreme anxiety and stress if there is too much of this mineral in your body. Crying also lubricates your eyes and prevents dehydration. So without tears, people wouldn’t even be able to see properly! Finally, crying kills bacteria and removes other dangerous toxins from your body. Without your tears, you would have much weaker health, not to mention, drive yourself crazy from your suppressed emotions!
5. When Crying, YOU MAKE OTHER people FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE EXPRESSING THEMSELVES
Only a mentally strong person is able to help people eliminate their fear of what others may think of them. By crying and showing their vulnerable side to others, people not only liberate themselves, but also help others feel more comfortable during the same process. A large number of people today push their emotions away, feeling afraid what other people may say, deem them inappropriate or think that revealing themselves in their purest form will scare people off. However, when a person does not block his emotions and simply cries in front of others whenever he needs to, he automatically contributes to a much healthier, free, and most important of all, a more authentic society.
