According to space telescope observations and satellite gathered data, the newly found object is made up of methane and water. Scientists further claim that it is larger than Jupiter and of highly metallic structure.
With the discovery being very recent, scientists cannot come to a hard conclusion on the nature of this mysterious celestial object code named CFBDSIR 2149 – 0403. It could be a young planet, travelling solo outside any solar system, or maybe it is a low mass dwarf with high metallic properties.
In their discoveries of other celestial objects, space researchers have encountered weird objects that go against everything we know about the Universe.
The new object is approximately 143 light years away from our planet and in the space research community it is usually called the ‘free floating planetary mass object’. First discovered by a group of Canadian scientists, this strange object has created a lot of excitement in the space community.
When initially discovered, the object was classified closer to a ‘rogue planet’ than a brown dwarf. This is because brown dwarfs are often 15 times larger than Jupiter, and even with its considerable size, the new object is nowhere near that big.
Further observations say this object has been travelling in a group of other celestial bodies, together orbiting the galaxy. The collected data indicated this object is around 70 million years old, which is quite young, compared to the age of the Universe.
However, with the little available data and the great distance between this object and Earth, scientists are still struggling to come up with any final conclusions. Discussions have produced some conflicting points of view.
It is still very hard to determine whether this object used to belong to a particular solar system, and based on its current movements, it is probably not a part of any group of planets. This object’s solo status has made it very difficult for researchers to determine its exact size and mass as there is nothing else close it to compare it to.
The poor availability of hard data has led to the creation of two main hypotheses. The first hypothesis says it is a solitary and isolated planetary object around 400 million years old and a size of two to thirteen times that of Jupiter’s.
The second hypothesis says it could be an older dwarf, around 2 billion years old, with a mass ranging between two and forty times the mass of Jupiter.
Researchers freely admit that at the moment they are not able to answer to most pressing questions concerning this object. Also, the lack of substantial information has resulted in the creation of two very different hypotheses with high discrepancy in the presumption of age and mass.
In case it is a planet, scientist cannot explain how it managed to move solo and end up in its current position. They are also entertaining the idea that this object might be neither planet nor a brown dwarf, but something the likes of which have never been seen before. It might be a completely unique celestial object. The smart brains are working on it daily, and with time, we will get more substantial information. What remains for us mere mortals is the notion that the Universe is a beautiful and a mysterious realm, and the fact we are a small part of it should be an honor.
